So you all made it as well. The predicted end of the world I mean. Were you anxious as 11.11am approached on December 21st that this could be your last day? Did you maybe have a momentary flicker of doubt that the Mayans perhaps were right after all? That their prediction, or at least what some interpreted them to have predicted, was spot on and that this was your last day on earth? There was plenty of hoop-la to accompany the event. There were expectations of space ships emerging in France. Some were entertaining hopes of last minute rescues from the unfolding chaos. Others were partying madly in case these were to be the last moments of planet earth. But in the end the day passed off without incident. I am here to write this and you are here to read it.
So let me offer just a few brief thoughts about the end of the world before I offer a few brief thoughts about its beginning. The Bible tackles both subjects. The end, we are taught, does not come with man’s observation. No scientist will be able to predict it. There will be no calendar which carries the date or gives some hint as to the year. Far from it. Christ’s own words go like this.
But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but my Father only.
For those who subscribe to the authority of the Bible, that decides it No speculation. No time-consuming efforts at prediction. Christ will return for sure, we believe. But it will not be announced on the Internet or be discussed in advance on Twitter. Speaking about what the experience of many people will be, the Lord taught us ‘…the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night.’ We simply won’t see it coming. It’s a warning to be ready. Yet the fact remains. His return will happen on a date unknown to any of us.
So we have thought briefly about the end of the world. Let’s now turn to the beginning. On April 11th we are playing host again to Creation Ministries International who are holding a meeting at the Chapel. The doctrine of creation gets a bad press from many. Some would try to paint is as being controversial, weird or belonging on the lunatic fringe. We feel those labels are unjust. So we would like to invite you to come and listen carefully to the evidence. You do not need to be a scientist to understand the case that is made. An inquiring and open mind will do just fine. Indeed the evidence for creation may be stronger than you first supposed. There will be refreshments served and a book stall where you can browse. We look forward to seeing you there.
